Our back patio is an extension of our living space that functions as a retreat and a work space. This patio area faces the back side of the farm which includes the riding arena, barn and paddocks. From this spot we can see all the way to the back of the property and allows us to have our eyes on everything all at once. We can also watch rides from here if we’d like. If I’m tending to something in the house, I can sit here and still watch Shana or Misha as they ride. We can always feel connected from this spot.
The kids also use this area as a study space, especially in the cooler months. The screens over the arches keep out the bugs and make it the ideal place to rest with a book or hunker down and get work down while still feeling close to nature.
We filled the space with special pieces like the green French Provincial-style desk chair that used to belong to my grandmother. My friend, Jill Zucker, gave us the Baker desk that we painted a beautiful, bright melon color and then lacquered so it would really pop in this space and compliment the bright green color that we painted the walls. The yellow leather chairs came from my parents. They were once a pale blue but we gave them a paint makeover to fit with the style of the space. Their clean lines are modern but they still give off just the right amount of a rustic feel. The tiled horse artwork is an added bonus that was here from the previous owners. It fits perfectly in the space and brings us back to one of the most important elements that we are all about…our horses.
